What a Real Carpentry Warranty Looks Like in Nashville

Most Nashville homeowners don't think about a carpentry warranty until something cracks, sags, or pulls away from a wall - usually about 14 months after the project finishes, just past whatever warranty their contractor offered. That timing isn't an accident. Knowing what a real warranty should cover is the difference between a crew standing behind their work and a crew dodging your texts.

Industry standard for residential carpentry in Tennessee is one year on craftsmanship - meaning if a joint opens up, a cabinet door sags, or trim pulls off the wall through normal use, your contractor comes back and fixes it on their dime. Anything less than one year is a red flag.

Cabinetry should carry an additional manufacturer warranty on the boxes (typically 5-10 years on construction, lifetime on hinges and drawer slides for quality hardware like Blum). Make sure you get the documentation in writing at install - not promised verbally and never delivered.

Framing and structural work should carry a longer warranty - we offer 5 years on framing because if something's wrong with the bones of a build, it tends to surface slowly. Roof structure, load paths, and stair stringers are not the place to cut corners or skimp on the warranty period.

What warranties should NOT cover: normal wood movement (small seasonal gaps in trim joints are physics, not defects), damage from water intrusion not caused by the carpentry work, paint cracking due to settling, or anything caused by another trade after we leave the site. Reasonable contractors put these exclusions in writing up front so there are no fights later.

Red flags: Verbal-only warranties. 30-day or 90-day craftsmanship warranties (way too short). Warranties that exclude 'wear and tear' without defining the term. Contractors who answer 'we'll work with you' instead of giving you specific terms. Get it in writing or assume you don't have one.

Our standard warranty: One year on all craftsmanship, five years on framing and structural work, plus we pass through whatever manufacturer warranties came with the materials.
